Chapter 50

AGGIE WAS EVEN MORE SURPRISED than Corbet at the sight of the President. She tugged at the hem of her miniskirt, as if trying to make it longer. She looked like a schoolgirl caught by the principal for inappropriate attire.

Van Zeeland frowned. “FBI relax its dress code, Agent Rittenhouse?”

“Yes sir,” she said, folding arms across her chest in an attempt to hide cleavage. “I mean, no sir they haven’t.” Her cheeks reddened. “I’m really sorry, sir. The getup was for an undercover operation that we—”

“Relax,” Van Zeeland said, motioning them to sit and introducing General Grobbs. “Your immediate superior, Colonel Mavenhall, is coordinating search efforts.”

Corbet took the chair closest to the President, resisted an urge to correct the man for referring to Mavenhall as his superior. Aggie slipped in beside him.

Van Zeeland cut to the chase. “I’m told you have vital information about Spartan.”

“We believe we have a lead on the location of the UFO he’s searching for,” Aggie said.

“More than just a lead,” Corbet said, not intimidated sitting three feet from the President. Instead, he felt lucky to have an opportunity to bargain for more information.

“We know the location,” he continued. “But first I need to know what you know about Spartan and Preceptor, why they’re here, what they want.”

Van Zeeland darkened. “This isn’t a trading post, young man.”

“And this isn’t just about finding that ship.”

Aggie, appalled that Corbet was giving the leader of the free world a hard time, kicked him under the table. Corbet winced and rubbed the sore ankle with his other foot, but pressed on.

“These aliens have something to do with a vision I’ve been having, a vision of an apocalypse. You need to tell me—”

“No, you need to tell us!” Van Zeeland snapped.

Corbet realized his tactic wasn’t working, that the President had no intention of playing this game. Four faces glowered at him. Aggie, Major Bander and Van Zeeland seemed merely pissed. But Gen. Grobbs looked ready to propose waterboarding.

Corbet had no choice. If he didn’t come clean, Aggie no doubt would reveal all.

“The spaceship is hidden underwater at Bellhopper’s Lake.” He told them the whole story, about Herman Ramagano having seen it splash down one night, about Hermie and Edgar’s secret plan to dive for it on Pearl Harbor day, 1960.

When Corbet finished, Grobbs snatched up a phone and recapped the tale to someone on the other end of the line.

“Full surveillance, clear out any friendlies,” the general ordered. “SEAL teams prepped and ready to dive in one hour.”

Aggie interrupted. “Sir, a heads up. If Spartan can tap into telecommunications within a limited area, it’s possible he can penetrate and eavesdrop on our secure nets.”

Grobbs incorporated her warning into his instructions. “Limit com chatter to a bare minimum. Multi-code transmissions only. Also, have this Edgar Brown brought in for further questioning.” He glared suspiciously at Corbet. “We need confirmation.”

Grobbs ended the call, motioned Aggie toward the exit. “The two of you have done a fine job. Remain at the field for reassignment.”

Corbet stayed in his seat.
